Geico’s membership-discount structure (federal employees, AARP, military, university alumni associations) is more developed than State Farm’s. If you belong to any of those groups, Geico’s stacked discounts can be meaningful.

State Farm’s Steer Clear program is the most documented under-25 safe-driving program among major carriers. For parents adding a teen driver and wanting a structured discount pathway, this is a differentiator.

Telematics: Drive Safe & Save vs DriveEasy

State Farm Drive Safe & Save offers an enrollment discount and adjusts based on driving data. The program does not surcharge for poor behavior — it’s asymmetric (discount or neutral). Available in most states.

Geico DriveEasy tracks speed, braking, phone use, and time-of-day. Discounts can be significant for demonstrably safe, low-frequency drivers. In some states, DriveEasy may increase rates if driving behavior scores poorly — check your state’s program terms before enrolling.

For drivers who want telematics with no downside rate risk, Drive Safe & Save’s asymmetric structure is preferable. For drivers who are confident in their driving scores and want the maximum potential discount, DriveEasy’s steeper reward schedule may be worth the risk.

Claims experience

The life insurance angle

For households shopping both auto and life, State Farm is the clearer answer. State Farm Life Insurance Company is one of the largest individual life writers in the US by policies in force, and the auto+life bundle discount through a single agent is a real discount. Geico does not underwrite life insurance (they refer to partners), so the multi-line efficiency doesn’t exist in Geico’s ecosystem.
