Citation format
When citing in publications, research, journalism, or downstream analytical products:
PolicyChat Rate Authority series
<SERIES_ID>, accessed<DATE>. https://rateauthority.org/data/series/`<SERIES_ID>`/
For aggregate / multi-series use:
Source: PolicyChat Rate Authority (https://rateauthority.org/data/), accessed
<DATE>.
What “appropriate credit” means
- In a publication or article: a line of attribution (citation format above) within the article body or in a footnote referencing the specific series ID.
- In a chart or visualization: a “Source: PolicyChat Rate Authority” label visible on the chart.
- In a derived dataset: a README or schema-level note indicating PolicyChat Rate Authority as the upstream source.
- In an academic paper: standard citation with series ID, accessed date, and methodology page URL.
What’s NOT required
- No payment of any kind for the data.
- No prior notification of intent to use.
- No advance approval of headlines or framing — editorial independence is preserved.
What IS required beyond attribution
- Don’t misrepresent. Don’t cite “current rates” when using NAIC 2023 baseline data — call it the 2023 baseline. The provenance is in every record; honor it.
- Don’t strip provenance. If you republish observation-level data, keep the
sourcefield intact. - Don’t claim endorsement. PolicyChat does not endorse downstream uses of its data.
Frequently asked
Can I use this in a commercial product? Yes. No commercial restriction. The CC BY 4.0 license is explicitly commercial-friendly.
Can I cache or mirror the API responses? Yes, with attribution preserved. We ask that you respect rate limits to keep the API available for everyone (1,000 requests/day anonymous; higher tiers at /pricing).
Do I need an API key? Not for low-volume reads (≤1,000 requests/day). Optional for higher-volume tiers.
What if I find an error? Email [email protected] with the series ID + value + correction. We publish corrections within 48 hours of verification.
Can I retract a citation if the underlying data is later corrected? The Rate Authority ledger preserves all historical observations. A corrected value appears as a NEW observation with a later effective date — the original observation you cited remains in the ledger and is still accessible at the same series_id + date.
